LACE UP AND SKATE WITH US!
A FREE HOCKEY & SKATING PROGRAM FOR AREA SCHOOLS!
We would like to invite your school to participate in our Scores for Schools program. This is a FREE program available to all area schools within the Newark area and surrounding communities. The program is designed to offer children in grades 1-5 the opportunity to come to the ice arena and learn the fundamentals of ice skating while gaining an understanding of the science behind the creation of ice. The program was established in 2009 by the Newark Ice Hockey Association (NIHA) and the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena (LGRIA). During its first year of operation, the program experienced great success, serving over 10 schools in 3 different school districts. The schools have provided tremedous feedback on how informative and FUN these field trips have been. Field trip days are usually Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays and are held at the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena. We will help you schedule either one or multiple grades. The trip accommodates 50 - 70 children per visit. We can coordinate multiple trips for the entire grade level. Times are available from 9:00 AM -11:30 AM.
Have Fun While Learning!
Science lessons are included with the visit by providing a lecture about making ice and it’s maintenance in the arena. Students are provided a hands-on approach to discover the science of hockey and skating. While on the ice, we discuss differences between figure and hockey skates and the changes in balance and stance. In hockey, we show the students how to shoot a puck and discuss with them the laws of motion, friction, and speed involved in the sport. The finale includes an up close look at the Zamboni. Children learn how the machine resurfaces the ice.
A Free Program? How?
Grants awarded to the Newark Ice Hockey Association from the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation and Mid-Am USA Hockey pay for all school transportation costs to the arena. This includes bus transportation, bus drivers and other expenses. Simply provide your costs to the Newark Ice Hockey Association and we will reimburse you. The Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena is excited to support this program! They provide the ice time, skates and instruction free of charge to the schools. The Arena will provide each child a packet of information about additional programs such as field trips, skating lessons, and open skate times. They look forward to having the children and their families come back and skate this season. In addition, NIHA will provide times for Free Hockey clinics and hockey leagues.
